Basin Dance Collective (BDC) is a Louisiana-based contemporary dance company aimed at enhancing the region through dance performance, teaching, and community engagement. Basin Dance Collective is committed to collaboration and creating professional dance experiences that magnify, enlighten and challenge our relationship with our own humanness.
Established in 2017, Basin Dance Collective has presented work at the Acadiana Center for the Arts, State of La Danse at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, the Louisiana Arts Summit in Baton Rouge, the Hilliard Art Museum, and with the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra. BDC also presents educational performances annually through the AcA’s Touring Arts program reaching over 1500 students each year.
Basin Dance Collective programs and performances have been supported with grant funding from the Lafayette Consolidated Government, the Lafayette Convention and Visitors Commission, the Junior League of Lafayette, and through an ArtSpark grant from the Lafayette Economic Development Authority. Artistic Director Clare Cook has been recognized with the 2017 ABC Icon “Rising Star” award and a 2019 Acadiana Profile “Trailblazer” award for her dedicated work to develop and enhance the local artistic community.
Basin Dance Collective is the resident dance company of Basin Arts, a multi-disciplinary arts incubator located in Downtown Lafayette, La. Basin Arts and Basin Dance Collective are integral parts of one another because Basin Arts provides a rehearsal space and training platform for the dance company as well as proximity to an array of artists from all disciplines ready to collaborate.
Basin Dance Collective draws inspiration from the sights, sounds, and sensations of South Louisiana known fondly as “Acadiana” to those in the region. The local culture is meant to be actively experienced through frequent festivals of music, food, dancing, and general merriment. Dance has been an integral part of our region’s history seen most clearly through social dances that accompany cajun and zydeco music. Basin Dance Collective draws from this immersive cultural tradition to create dances where contemporary performance and experiential environments intersect.
In addition to social dance traditions, there are many youth training programs, a college degree program at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, and performance venues committed to attract dance audiences, yet remarkably, Basin Dance Collective emerges as the first professional modern dance company in the region in over 25 years. The company is dedicated to the development of the professional dance community by hiring local dancers for paid annual contracts, commissioning local and guest choreographers to create new work, and sharing these experiences with young dancers.
